Packaging Permeability And Tea Freshness

When choosing tea, we often focus on origin, grade, and processing. Yet the packaging that protects the tea from the moment it leaves the factory is just as critical. One key property - permeability - plays a decisive role in how long a tea stays fresh.
Why Permeability Matters
The main driver of tea quality decline during storage is oxidation. When oxygen meets tea polyphenols, chlorophyll, and aromatic compounds, it triggers colour fading, loss of freshness, and flavour deterioration. Therefore, slowing or preventing oxygen entry is central to tea preservation.
Permeability of Common Packaging Materials
Plain plastic bags: High oxygen permeability - suitable only for short-term use
Aluminium foil laminated bags: Excellent oxygen barrier - the current industry standard, especially with resealable closures
Metallized film bags: Moderate barrier performance, lower cost, but less protective
Paper/ metal/ tin canisters: Impermeable themselves - but seal tightness is critical
Packaging Needs by Tea Type
Green tea, yellow tea, light oolongs: Oxygen-sensitive - require high-barrier packaging (foil laminate with nitrogen flushing or vacuum)
Black tea, roasted oolongs: More tolerant, but still need good sealing
Pu-erh, dark teas (compressed) : Benefit from minimal oxygen exchange for ageing - but moisture must be kept out
