The Rise Of Chinese Black Tea Exports
Sep 13, 2023
According to the statistics from the China Tea Marketing Association, Chinese black tea exports have increased from 58,000 tons in 2010 to 113,000 tons in 2020, with an average annual growth rate of 6.9%. China's share of the global black tea market has also risen from 8.6% to 14.7% in the same period. This shows that black tea has become more competitive and attractive to international consumers.
There are several reasons for the rise of black tea exports. First of all, China has a long history and tradition of tea cultivation and processing, dating back to thousands of years ago. China has a rich diversity of tea varieties, regions, and styles, which can cater to different tastes and preferences of consumers. For example, some of the most famous black teas are Keemun from Anhui province, Yunnan Gold from Yunnan province, Lapsang Souchong from Fujian province, and Dian Hong from Yunnan province. Each of these teas has its own distinctive characteristics and flavor profiles.
Secondly, China has invested a lot in improving the quality and safety of its black tea products, especially after the implementation of the Tea Industry Development Plan (2016-2020) by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The plan aims to enhance the standards and regulations of tea production, processing, packaging, and testing, as well as to promote the certification and branding of Chinese tea products. These measures have helped to improve the reputation and trustworthiness of Chinese black tea in the international market.

Thirdly, China has been actively expanding its black tea export channels and markets, especially in the emerging economies and regions. For example, China has signed free trade agreements with many countries and regions, such as ASEAN, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Peru, Pakistan, Georgia, Maldives, etc., which have reduced or eliminated tariffs and trade barriers for black tea exports. China has also participated in various international exhibitions and events to showcase its black tea products and culture, such as the World Tea Expo in Las Vegas, the World Tea Festival in Seoul, the International Tea Fair in Hong Kong, etc.
Chinese black tea exports have risen significantly in the past decade, due to its high quality, rich variety, unique culture, improved standards and regulations, and expanded trade channels and markets. However, there are still some challenges and opportunities for further development.
For example,
- How to increase the awareness and recognition of black tea brands among international consumers?
- How to cope with the increasing competition from other major black tea producing countries, such as India, Sri Lanka, Kenya, etc.?
- How to adapt to the changing consumer preferences and demands for more organic, fair trade, and specialty black teas?
- How to leverage the advantages of e-commerce platforms and social media platforms to promote black tea products and culture?
These are some of the questions that need to be addressed by the Chinese black tea industry in order to maintain its growth momentum and achieve greater success in the global market.
