China Keemun tea comes from the Chinese leaf Camellia sinensis. The name originates from the town of Keemun in the province of Anhui, the very well-respected tea-producing region of China.

It has narrow, tightly twisted black leaves that brew a brilliant reddish-brown cup with a full-bodied, gentle light with layers of flavor-both smoky and malty with a hint of nuttiness.

Keemun tastes terrific with milk or sugar and goes exceptionally well with baked bread, cakes, and muffins. Try a steaming hot cup of Keemun in the afternoon, and you will discover a particular pleasure and refreshment.

In general, making black tea requires the leaves to be plucked and allowed to wither. Excess moisture is lost through drying. This procedure makes the tea more malleable for it to be handled and rolled. This rolling process is intrinsic as it deepens the flavor in the leaf.

The leaves are left to oxidize over time, allowing the enzymes to turn black eventually. Finally, it's baked to remove any remaining moisture and create that black crispness. Keemun leaves are mainly decorative, shaped in beautifully twisted coils, which makes Keemun 'a lovely and engaging tea to use'.

Types of Keemun tea

There are different types of Keemun black tea. Keemun Mao Feng usually has more extended, wiry leaves with golden buds. It's harvested in spring from the same plant used for making green Mao Feng. Keemun gongfu tea is any traditionally made, unbroken Keemun tea. The third one, Keemun Haoya, is made from buds and should have a smoother and sweeter flavor. Those types of tea are best brewed using the gongfu brewing method.

Steeping Instructions

We believe tea should be brewed to suit your taste. We’re honored to recommend getting you started, but don’t hesitate to experiment! When brewing your tea, the primary considerations are tea quantity, water temperature, and steeping time. We recommend black teas to be soaked for 3 to 5 minutes in water heated to a full, rolling boil and avoid overboiling. Avoid flooding your tea too long because you’ll extract undesirable bitterness from the leaves.
